They Both Go Hand In Hand

Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust. For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me; for he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words? – John 5:45-47

Many people today say just live in, study and obey the New Testament, that Jesus is the author or a newer and better covenant, that Jesus fulfilled the Old Testament when He died, that the LAW has no power over us.  To the BELIEVER, that is TRUE.   However, the above verses show that the laws of the Old Testament are still in effect today. Whether you believe in Jesus or not, you can’t go around killing people. Exodus 20:13  In fact, if you DO NOT believe in Jesus, you are going to be JUDGED by the laws of the Old Testament and Jesus is not going to be your accuser, MOSES is!

This concludes my notes and thoughts on John Chapter 5

The Hour Is Coming

Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. – John 5:28-29

This speaks of two resurrections.  The first, those who are saved and then those who are not.  I believe the latter is the “great multitude that no man can count” as recorded in Revelation 7:9.  To me, it is just common sense that the number of non believers will be greater than the number of believers.

It may not be today, or tomorrow, or the next day, but rest assured the hour is coming!  Are YOU ready?

3 Statements

Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise. For the Father loveth the Son, and sheweth him all things that himself doeth: and he will shew him greater works than these, that ye may marvel. For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will. For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son: – John 5:19-22

In these verses Jesus made 3 profound statements:

01.  I AM God and I do what God does.  verse 19

02.  The Lord Jesus raises the dead.  Verse 21

03.  All judgement has been given to Jesus. Verse 22

He is God, He will raise the dead, and He will judge both the believer and the non believer.  The believer will only have his WORKS judged, but he himself will be saved.  The non believer will be judged because they did not believe in Jesus.

Now there is an apple of gold to chew on.

Only Believe

When Jesus saw him lie, and knew that he had been now a long time in that case, he saith unto him, Wilt thou be made whole? – John 5:6

At the pool of Bethesda, there was a man who had suffered 38 years with a disease, sickness or as the bible says it an infirmity.  He tried to get in the pool to get healed, but someone always beat him to it.  I believe Jesus asked the man if he wanted to be made whole for 2 reasons.

  1. To stir up hope in the man.  Most likely the man at that time was probably hoping Jesus would put him in the water.

  2. The second reason I believe was to get the mans eyes off the pool and get them focused on Jesus. Here the impotent man meets the omnipotent God!

How many times have we asked Jesus to heal us and instead of BELIEVING, we subconsciously still look for other means to be healed?  We pray “Jesus please heal me of this cold, (or whatever) and then we go look for cough medicine, aspirin, or we make an appointment to go see a doctor.

I’m guilty of this myself.  I believe we all are at one time or another.

Jesus don’t need any outside help to heal us.  He has only 1 condition.  BELIEVE what HE says!

And that truly is an apple of gold.

What Caused The Jews To Want To Try To Kill Jesus?

And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day. – John 5:16

Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God. – John 5:18

The text here is John Chapter 5:5-18 there is so much to write about in these verses.  Jesus healed a man at the pool of Bethesda on the Sabbath day.  This was a huge no no to the Jews.  According to them, nobody was allowed to do the slightest bit of work on the Sabbath Day.  That included carrying a mans bed.

Jesus changed all of that when He told the man to “Take up thy bed and walk” John 5:11. Doing that, Jesus showed He was God and that He could do anything HE wanted at any time HE wanted.

The Jews seen Jesus as just a man. They were insulted and embarrassed and more than any other miracle Jesus had done, this one was the most offensive to the Jews.

Do We Really & Truly Believe?

Jesus saith unto him, Go thy way; thy son liveth. And the man BELIEVED the word that Jesus had spoken unto him, and he went his way. – John 4:50

In the book of John chapter 4:46-53 there is the story of a nobleman who’s son was sick and he came to Jesus to ask him to heal his son.  Jesus told the man to go home, that his son would live.  Notice here that Jesus did not go home with the man to heal his son.  He simply spoke it.

Now here is the thing, the man simply BELIEVED what Jesus told him and he went home and found his son healed!  Can you imagine how hard it must have been for this man to simply take Jesus at His word?

How many of you have a loved one who is sick, or needs surgery or simply needs healing? How many of you have gone to Jesus in prayer and asked for it?  I believe that Jesus is saying to you now, “Go thy way, thy son or daughter liveth.”

Now what are YOU going to do?  Are you going to sit there, worry, rehash it over and over in your mind and heart, and fill yourself up with doubt and fear?  Or are you going to BELIEVE Jesus and GO THY WAY?

Think on this a moment…Matthew 5:36 tells us that we can’t make a single hair on our heads turn white or black.  John 15:5 says that apart from Jesus we can do NOTHING!  So, why are we worrying about something we can’t do anything about?  What we CAN do is PRAY and BELIEVE.  Most of us have the praying part down to a science, but the believing part, that is where most of us fall short.

My truck broke down on me several months ago.  I need a new vehicle and I have no money to get one because I live on a fixed income.  I’ve asked Jesus over and over for a new vehicle.  At the time of this post, I still havent gotten one yet.  But I BELIEVE it is coming.  Somehow, some way, out of the blue, a new vehicle will just miraculously pop into my possession.  Usually, when I expect it the least.

Without that BELIEF, I’d be a jumble of worry and fear which will accomplish NOTHING.  I can’t make a new vehicle come to me.  All I can do is dump my request on Christs shoulders and LEAVE it there.  The rest is up to HIM for like John says…apart from Jesus I can do nothing anyway, so why drive myself nuts with worry?

Did I make my point?  Heck the reason we woke up this morning is because of Gods grace and mercy.  It is NOTHING we did of our own accord.  We need to apply that to EVERY area of our lives.

BELIEVE what Jesus has said concerning your loved one or your situation and GO THY WAY.  If this is too hard for you to do, ask yourself this?  What else CAN I do?

But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. – James 1:6-7

Lessons From The Woman At The Well Story

Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: and it was about the sixth hour.

There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink.

(For his disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.)

Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans.

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water.

11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water?

12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle?

13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again:

14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life.

15 The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw.

16 Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband, and come hither.

17 The woman answered and said, I have no husband. Jesus said unto her, Thou hast well said, I have no husband:

18 For thou hast had five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband: in that saidst thou truly.

19 The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.

20 Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.

21 Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.

22 Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

23 But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.

25 The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things.

26 Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he.

27 And upon this came his disciples, and marvelled that he talked with the woman: yet no man said, What seekest thou? or, Why talkest thou with her?

28 The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men,

29 Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?

30 Then they went out of the city, and came unto him. – John 4:5-30

HUGE lesson in this passage.  Jesus shows us the perfect model for witnessing.  First, He struck up a innocent conversation with her.  “give me to drink” v7.  When she got rebellious v9 , Jesus gently stayed on point v10.  He then offered her salvation. v13-14. She wanted it. v15.  Next, He got her to speak of her sin and she was honest about it. v17-18  She repented and believed and He saved her v19-29.  Finally she went all through the city telling everyone she knew about Jesus and the people of the city came to Him. v30

Now that truly is an apple of gold!

His Name Is Jesus

He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. – John 3:18

His name is JESUS!

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. – Acts 4:12

Saved By Grace

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. – John 3:16

The message I got from this verse is that God does not save by love.  He saves by grace.  Ephesians 2:8-9 says For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

God does save us BECAUSE HE loves us, but He actually saves us by GRACE.
